On Sunday 12th July, a dedicated team of staff and Sixth Form students from Southborough High School woke up bright and early to compete in the 2026 Saucony London 10K. Getting up for the early start was no mean feat, especially given the late-night drama of the England vs Norway match the evening before!
The London 10K has become a proud annual fixture in the Southborough diary. For many years, staff and students have taken to the capital's streets to raise money for worthy causes, an initiative passionately led by Headteacher Mr Smith since its inception. This year, the school chose to support a charity much closer to home: The Fircroft Trust.
Based in Surbiton and Tolworth, The Fircroft Trust is an independent charity founded in 1967. They support local adults living with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health challenges, equipping them to live well and independently. While mental health affects us all, many still struggle in silence. The Fircroft Trust works tirelessly to create safe spaces and offer the compassionate care needed to transform lives.
Many in our community will recognise the two Fircroft charity shops on Tolworth Broadway, which are run by volunteers to raise vital funds. Beyond retail, their main Surbiton site hosts a Wellbeing Hub, alongside a 'Men’s Shed' and local residential services, all providing an invaluable network of support. Given Southborough’s long-standing relationship with the trust, the school was thrilled to raise funds for their essential daily work.
Despite the previous night's football and scorching temperatures—even at 8:00 am—the entire Southborough team completed the race in excellent time.
Reflecting on the atmosphere, Deputy Head Boy Ethan said: "It was my first time taking part and it was amazing! The route was packed with iconic landmarks, and the crowds were brilliant, handing out sweets and high-fives all the way."
Fellow Deputy Head Boy James added: "Firefighters were on hand to spray us with cooling mists of water, and the incredible live bands and DJs stationed along the course really helped us keep up the momentum and power through to the finish line!"
Our goal is to raise £1,500 to help expand these essential services. If you would like to support this fantastic cause, please donate via Southborough’s JustGiving Page.
