At Southborough, we are incredibly proud to be a vibrant, multicultural boys’ comprehensive school. Our community is a wonderful mix of students from a vast array of ethnicities, cultures, and beliefs. Because of this, we place relationships and mutual respect at the absolute heart of our core values. Celebrating our differences isn’t just something we do occasionally—it is central to who we are.
Last week, our school community came together to celebrate this ethos with a very special Culture & Diversity assembly for our Year 7 and Year 8 students. The event kicked off with an inspiring talk on 'Being an Ally', delivered by Year 12 student Aaliyah on behalf of the Sixth Form. Her message was clear and powerful: no matter who you are, we must respect each other's differences and consistently show kindness and inclusivity.
We were also privileged to welcome several VIP guests to the event, including representatives from a variety of local faith groups, the Mayor, and John Azah from the Kingston Race and Equalities Council. They spoke passionately to our students, reinforcing the importance of community cohesion.
The assembly was alive with energy, music, and performance. Our talented musicians performed brilliant covers of classics like Hey Jude and One Love, while our drama students moved the audience with a powerful short piece entitled ‘One School, Many Stories’.
The celebration also engaged our students' taste buds and language skills. Our ‘Young Leaders’ prepared a delicious selection of international dishes for everyone to sample. Following the feast, a lively 'pass the microphone' game saw students proudly addressing the audience in their native tongues—including Polish, South African, Hindi, Tamil, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese.
While the event was filled with joy, music, and fun, it carried a vital message for our young men: the lifelong importance of showing tolerance, empathy, and understanding towards other people’s cultures, sexualities, ethnicities, and beliefs. Thank you to everyone who made this spectacular day possible, especially Mr Edwards, Mrs Sameri, Mrs Ball, Mrs Khan, Ms Bashir, Mrs Yendoll, together with our fabulous Sixth Form Student Leadership Team, including Aaliyah, Ethan and James.
