There may be a number of Year 6 students wondering what life will be like during their first year at Southborough High School. To find out, we caught up with current Year 7 students Pranish, Jacob, Finlay, Oliver, and Freddie as they hit their final summer term. They were incredibly keen to share their experiences with the Year 6 boys joining us this September.
Seamless Settling and Free Clubs
The boys could not praise the school’s welcoming culture enough. They all agreed that our robust transition package—Friendship Day, Welcome Day, Summer School, and the Walton Firs activity day—made a phenomenal difference, helping them learn the school layout, meet friendly staff, and build lasting friendships.
The boys also spoke highly of their Head of Year, describing them as warm and deeply supportive. They noted that making friends was incredibly easy, especially by joining Southborough's wide variety of extra-curricular clubs (like drama, chess, and history), which are completely free of charge. Many boys even arrive early each morning to play football on the AstroTurf or use the cricket nets, noting that the encouraging PE staff ensure everyone can have a go.
Exciting Lessons and Manageable Workloads
Academically, the transition has been a major highlight. In Science, the boys loved hands-on experiments like growing crystals, making parachutes, and testing acids. Creativity has thrived in Design Technology (DT) through crafting key fobs and tote bags, while Food Technology has been a firm favourite for baking delicious cakes.
The boys emphasized that teachers across all subjects are genuinely "on their side"—distinctly kind, approachable, and firm but fair. While they admitted homework can sometimes be tricky, they agreed that departments plan homework tasks evenly so it stays manageable. They even praised the three Pre-Public Exam (PPE) periods; though demanding focus, each exam week is rewarded with a full day of Interform sports (football or rugby) and a half-day off. As the boys put it: "Result!"
Looking Ahead to September
Whether their favourite subject is English, Drama, PE, or Languages, the boys look forward to school every day—and they love the delicious hot and cold options in the dining hall!
