Southborough has always championed the spirit of innovation, but this year, our Year 10 students took that ambition to a whole new level. For the first time ever, Year 10 participated in the Learning Partner’s Dragons’ Den competition, an intense entrepreneurial challenge - hosted by King’s College Guildford - that saw our boys go head-to-head with a formidable line-up of secondary schools from across Surrey.
The competition was meticulously designed to mirror the high-stakes environment of the famous BBC programme. This wasn't just a classroom exercise; it was a rigorous test of business acumen, public speaking, and nerves of steel. Each team was tasked with producing a comprehensive business plan, calculating equity shares, and—most dauntingly—pitching their vision to a panel of "Dragons" (local business experts) in front of a live audience.
Southborough entered two distinct teams, each bringing a unique flair to the "Den."
The first team showcased the power of collaboration by adopting and refining an idea originally sparked by our Year 12 Young Enterprise team: 'Go Fish World'. This project focused on a series of educational and engaging card games designed to bring global culture to the tabletop. The Year 10s took the mantle with incredible energy, proving they could handle the marketing and strategic logistics required to turn a creative concept into a viable commercial product.
The second team tapped into a very specific "niche" market well-known to any secondary school student: the classroom environment. They developed a prototype for 'Oilify', under the sleek tagline "Elevate your essence." Designed as a long-lasting masculine scent, Oilify was pitched as a dual-purpose solution to keep both the students and their classrooms smelling clean and fresh. The boys’ ability to identify a relatable problem and engineer a practical, sophisticated product prototype was a highlight of the day.
The atmosphere in the room was electric and, at times, incredibly intimidating. Standing before the Dragons to ask for "investment" requires a level of confidence that many adults would find challenging. However, our Southborough representatives rose to the occasion.
While the competition was fierce, Team Go Fish World truly captured the Dragons' imagination. Their polished pitch, clear financial projections, and the sheer fun of their product resonated with the judges. We are thrilled to announce that they secured Second Place overall—a massive achievement for our debut entry—and walked away with well-deserved Amazon vouchers as a reward for their hard work.
The journey doesn't end in the Den. We are extremely proud of every Year 10 student who stepped up to the plate. They represented the school with professionalism and showed that Southborough boys have the "Midas touch" when it comes to creativity.
The next step? Real-world retail. Both teams will continue to refine their ideas throughout the summer term, culminating in an opportunity to sell their products directly to their peers right here at Southborough.
Congratulations to all our budding entrepreneurs—the future of business looks very bright indeed!
