World Book Day at Southborough High School was nothing short of awesome last week. While this annual event serves as a fantastic global celebration of the importance of reading, for us at Southborough, the mission to foster a lifelong love of literature is a year-round commitment. Cultivating reading confidence has been high on our agenda for many years, and literacy initiatives are woven into the very fabric of our everyday curriculum.

From structured Guided Reading Sessions and Lexia Literacy support to developing critical reading skills for all, we ensure every student has the tools to succeed. Our comprehensive approach includes targeted phonics intervention and regular writing and poetry workshops to stretch the imagination. At the heart of this culture is our school library—a warm, welcoming sanctuary that remains buzzing with activity from the early morning until well after the final bell. It is here, amongst the bookcases, that our students truly discover the power of a good book.

The highlight of World Book Day itself saw a group of our Year 7 students travel into Kingston for a bespoke workshop designed to ignite their creative sparks. The boys were tasked with the challenge of crafting their very own stories using a dynamic storyboard format, allowing them to visualise their narratives as they wrote. The atmosphere at Waterstones was electric; the staff went above and beyond to bring the magic of fiction to life, dressing up as iconic characters including a giant whale, the legendary Worzel Gummidge, and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

Our students were made to feel incredibly welcome and thrived being surrounded by thousands of titles. Armed with their £1 book tokens, the boys eagerly explored the vast selection of World Book Day titles available, eventually choosing their own stories to take home. It was a wonderful reminder of the simple joy found in browsing a bookshop.

The literary excitement continued the following day as we welcomed a true industry heavyweight to the school: children's author and editor, Mandy Archer. As the former Creative Head of Children’s Books for BBC Worldwide and current Head of Brand for Harry Potter at Bloomsbury Publishing, Mandy brought a wealth of expertise to Southborough. Having been the driving force behind the launch of the Pocket Potters—the popular little guides to the Wizarding World—she offered our students a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most beloved franchises.

Mandy delivered a series of fascinating workshops focused on opening young people’s minds to the diverse career paths available within the publishing industry. She was highly engaging, and our students were captivated by the story of her own professional journey. From editorial decisions to brand management, her insights gave the boys plenty to think about regarding their own futures. It was the perfect conclusion to a week that proved reading isn't just a hobby at Southborough—it’s a gateway to endless opportunities.
