Southborough’s new learners from Years 10 and 12

Today, a group of our Year 10 and 12 students embarked on a truly transformative journey at St John’s Sports Centre – learning to swim. This initiative, organized by James Colbert and Niall, aims to equip our students with essential life skills and promote water safety. By mastering swimming, students gain confidence, improve physical fitness, and learn the importance of safety in and around water.

As the students tentatively made their way into the water, it was evident what a privilege it is to witness the beginning of their swimming journey. The support from the amazing team of coaches at St John’s has been instrumental in helping our students achieve their goals, one stroke at a time. The coaches have shown incredible dedication and patience, ensuring that each student feels comfortable and confident in the water.

Their expertise has been invaluable in teaching the students not only the technical aspects of swimming but also the importance of water safety.

In the UK, 71% of under-18 drowning victims are male. This statistic underscores the importance of teaching water safety and swimming skills to our students. Southborough High School has a proud track record in promoting safety in watersports, and this new initiative is a testament to our commitment to student well-being.

We believe that by equipping our students with these essential skills, we are helping to prevent potential tragedies and fostering a sense of responsibility and awareness around water.

We are extremely grateful to James Colbert and Niall for organizing this opportunity and to the dedicated coaches at St John’s Sports Centre. Their expertise and encouragement are helping our students gain confidence and competence in the water. The coaches have gone above and beyond to create a supportive and encouraging environment, making sure that each student receives personalized attention and guidance. Their commitment to our students' success is truly commendable.

This swimming program is more than just a physical activity; it is a life skill that can prevent tragedies and open up new opportunities for our students. We believe that every student should have the chance to learn to swim, and we are committed to providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed. By learning to swim, students not only improve their physical fitness but also gain a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence that can positively impact other areas of their lives.

As we continue to prioritize the safety and development of our students, we look forward to seeing them grow and thrive in this new challenge. Thank you to everyone involved in making this program a success, and we encourage all parents and guardians to support their children in this important endeavour. Your support is crucial in helping our students make the most of this opportunity and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives."
