Just before Easter, Southborough High School hosted a special A-Level English Literature Conference. Organised by our fabulous English Faculty and supported by our super Sixth Formers, the day proved to be both enjoyable and rewarding.
Students and staff from George Abbot School and Fullbrook School joined us and it was great to meet and share ideas and thoughts with so many like-minded literature lovers!
The conference began at lunchtime, when students from all three schools enjoyed copious amounts of pizza and soft drinks whilst chatting and getting to know each other. Once introductions were over, students were then put into four groups and each one was assigned to a particular English Literature-based session.
They included: “What can we learn from Literature’s Villains?”, “Man Up: Macho Men and Misfits: Exploring Archetypes of Masculinity in Literature.”, “The Mad Woman in The Attic: Women, Madness and Control in Three Key Texts.” and “From post-colonial to de-colonial: Examining Representations of Race and Gender in Popular Culture and Literary Texts.”
After the sessions had finished, everyone congregated back to the Sixth Form study room for a question and answer session and students were given the opportunity to stand up share their literary thoughts and feedback gained from the bespoke classes. Special recognition was given to one student from each school for particular engagement and enthusiasm demonstrated during the afternoon.
Students commented that they found the afternoon highly interesting and rewarding – and for the Year 13 students, highly useful towards their up-coming A level English Literature exams!
We’d like to say a huge thank you to our Head of English Faculty Ms Salloo for organising and running the event and to Mr Smith, Mr Haque Mrs Dee for also delivering such interesting and topical classes. Thank you also to our Sixth Form helpers and supporting staff and students from George Abbott and Fullbrook School.
