Last Friday, Southborough High School had the privilege of hosting the renowned Globe Players for a captivating performance of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The event, held in the main hall, was specially arranged for our Year 7 students, many of whom were experiencing live theatre for the very first time.
From the moment the players stepped onto the stage, the audience was transported to Verona’s streets, where the age-old feud between the Montagues and Capulets began to unfold. The Globe Players skilfully brought the characters to life, weaving together Shakespeare’s original text with dynamic physical theatre and relatable explanations to ensure every student could follow the storyline and connect with its themes.
One of the highlights of the performance was the balcony scene, where the chemistry between Romeo and Juliet drew audible gasps and cheers from the crowd. The students were particularly impressed by the actors’ ability to make the complex language of Shakespeare understandable and engaging. Interspersed throughout the performance were moments of humour, dramatic sword fights, and poignant reflections, which kept the audience riveted from start to finish.
To complement the performance, the Globe Players included an interactive segment, inviting students to ask questions about the play, the characters, and even the practicalities of performing Shakespeare in modern times. This interactive element provided students with a deeper appreciation of Shakespeare’s work and its relevance today.
Year 7 students were buzzing with excitement after the show, with many sharing their newfound enthusiasm for Shakespeare. One student commented, "I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but now I want to read the whole play!"
Southborough High School would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the Globe Players for their inspiring performance and for igniting a love of Shakespeare in our students. We look forward to welcoming them back in the future for more unforgettable theatrical experiences.
