Each year thousands of young people from primary, secondary and SEND schools across the country unite in the world’s largest youth Shakespeare festival. This inspirational programme was developed from the BBC’s much-loved classroom resource, Shakespeare: The Animated Tales. The comprehensive Festival process culminates in exhilarating performance evenings; young people aged 8-18 playing Shakespeare in professional theatres.

This raises aspirations and unlocks the potential of students and teachers alike.

And so it was that a group of Year 7-10 Southborough students –led by Drama Teacher Ms Brown - put their names forward to take part in this amazing supercurricular initiative. Putting their creative heads together, they worked during lunch times and after school to devise their very own interpretation of Othello.

Pouring all their creative energy and enthusiasm into the project, their performance gave a contemporary twist to the story of Othello and was set around a modern day ‘Frat House’ battle for the ‘Desday Cup. ’ Brimming with toxic masculinity and fun in equal measure, the highlight was a spectacular ‘dance off’ to the Macarena, a tongue in cheek choice of song full of energy and innuendo.

After hours of rehearsals, the students performed their devised half hour play to a packed audience at The Rose Theatre, Kingston. And it was a resounding hit!

Back at school, students were rewarded with an after-show party of music and delicious doughnut treats from Mrs Brown, who was especially proud of their wonderful achievement!

Well done to the following students for delivering such a fantastic performance:

Henry A, Jason B, Joseph C, Owen C, Seth DK, Zein ES, Visula G, Luca G, James H, Beau H, Declan J, James L, Issac M, Jack N, Rufus O, Joshua P, Ethan S,  Jai S, Cruz T, Luca T, Jack W, Lucas W and Emmanuel Y.

And many thanks to Drama Teacher Mrs Brown for all her hard work and dedication with this enjoyable and fulfilling project.
