"Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong."
PE is taught as a core subject to all pupils from Years 7-11.
All students in Key Stage 3 have at least one PE lesson (often gym based) in addition to a double games lesson. The major sports for boys are rugby, football, basketball, cricket, table tennis and athletics.
Further options are available for older students including volley ball, climbing and fitness training, to name but a few. We run a large number of teams in the traditional sports and provide opportunities for all students to be involved, regardless of their ability. Most fixtures are played after school, with occasional weekend matches. The school is determined that all students take part in a wide range of these sports in their time with us, in order to develop their skills and abilities, not just as sportsmen, but as team players, problem solvers and leaders.
The facilities at SHS are excellent with 9 acres of playing fields located opposite the main school site, catering for athletics, cricket, football and rugby. On the main school site the department has use of two dedicated sports halls and a fitness/cardio suite.
Optional after school clubs are run for all year groups to allow students of all abilities the opportunity to train, improve in and enjoy their sport.
The department offers arrange of course including GCSE PE and BTEC L2 and L3 courses in Sport. All three courses introduce students to a wide range of disciplines and topics such as sports psychology, injury management, movement analysis, anatomy and physiology, fitness and nutrition etc. Please see the course choice booklets for up to date curriculum information.
