Aspiration, Commitment and Excellence

I love being the headteacher of this school. Not only does the progress we have made over recent years fill me with enormous pride, but I also know that this is a school where staff and students work exceptionally well together. We are a school that is going places!

Here at Southborough High School, we believe that as a community, we’ve reacted pretty well to the demands of online teaching during current restrictions. Make no mistake, it’s certainly been a sharp learning curve for us all but over the past few months, our teaching staff have become a lot more creative and imaginative (not to mention techno-savvy!) in delivering online lessons and tasks and as a result, the response from our students across all year groups has, for the best part, been utterly amazing!

Indeed, as each week has passed during time away from school, we seem to have moved from a ‘reactive’ curriculum into an ‘activities based’ curriculum and the one main question on the lips of all our teaching staff has been ‘What can I do to make my online lesson more engaging and enjoyable for the boys?

Whilst we can’t wait to get back to face-to-face teaching in the classroom, there’s been a lot of positives that our teaching staff have been able to take away from their online teaching experiences over the past three months, including:

¨ 100% engagement from a fair proportion of our boys

¨ the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from students regarding online feedback from staff (the boys love it!)

¨ the chance for students to both explore and demonstrate their creativity and imagination through new technologies.

Of course, whilst our teachers have been working flat out ‘on the front line’ so to speak, the school – just like any other form of organisation or business – has also benefitted from the hard work and dedication of a whole host of support staff whose workload has, despite most students working from home,

remained constant, if not grown in size and who have also worked tirelessly either from their home or on site to ensure the smooth running of our school throughout the last few challenging months, including:

¨ the Senior Leadership Team, who tirelessly plan, organise and deliver effective strategic responses to ever changing government advice and who ensure that our boys get the very best deal possible in their education during this difficult time

¨ the site staff, who conduct vital maintenance and ensure health and safety recommendations are undertaken in a timely fashion

¨ the finance team, who guarantee that our bills are paid promptly, vital orders are placed and our accounts are kept up-to-date and accurate for audit

¨ the army of cleaners, who roll up their sleeves and physically give it their all to ensure that the school meets the strictest of cleanliness guidelines

¨ the administrative /office team who, mainly working from home, work long hours to keep up with the endless demands of telephone enquiries, sending out parental texts, letters, emails, reports, updating attendance figures, uploading vital data to the school systems, timetabling, transition, enrolment, marketing, photocopying and such like

¨ the Heads of Year,  Pastoral and SEN teams, including teaching assistants, technicians  and other support staff, who have kept in regular contact with the parents /carers of our most vulnerable students, conducting one to one meetings and overseeing the daily care and supervision of our keyworker children

¨ the IT team, who provide constant technical support and advice to all staff, ensuring that our online systems run well for both teaching and administrative tasks

In short, if the last few months have taught us anything, it’s that we at Southborough work very much as a TEAM and that we all have an important part to play in delivering the very best education for our

students. We don’t’ really know what to expect at the start of the new academic year in September, but whatever the future holds, we’ll be ready!

Please take a look at some of the amazing things that our students have been working on. It’s just a snapshot of what’s been going on, but hopefully it’ll give you all a flavour of how engaged, creative, inventive and truly awesome our students have been in their online learning during Lockdown.

I am delighted to annouce that we have been awarded the Silver Healthy Schools Award. Thanks go to our Business Manager, Mrs Bennett, who led on this important initiative.
