Aspiration, Commitment and Excellence

I love being the headteacher of this school. Not only does the progress we have made over recent years fill me with enormous pride, but I also know that this is a school where staff and students work exceptionally well together. We are a school that is going places!

Early last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the closure of both primary and secondary schools across England as part of another national lockdown too quash the spread of corona virus. Whilst many schools have, in practice, remained physically opened to children of critical workers and teachers now juggle the demands of delivering remote learning to the majority of their class whilst other students are also present in the classroom, it was decided by the Government that, once again, GCSE and A level exams would be cancelled this summer. Christmas Charity Appeals Success

 XmasFoodAppeal

The Christmas season was, most would agree, an especially hard one for many. Families up and down the country made the ultimate sacrifice of not spending time with their loved ones, all so that they didn’t put them at risk. Some people found themselves spending much of the holidays on their own. Many businesses were once more closed down, devastating their owners and the people who worked for them.

Headteacher Mr Niall Smith : "

I am delighted to inform you that Southborough has been awarded the prestigious Healthy Schools Gold Award. Our success in this important part of school life has been led by our Academy Business Manager, Mrs Bennett, who pioneered our high impact work on eyesight screening, amongst many other great initiatives."

Just over a month ago, at the start of November, five members of Southborough staff - namely Mr Jordan, Mr Colbert, Mr Grinstead, Mr Boorman and Mr Swinchin-Rew - and two Sixth Formers - Daniel S and Richard V -bravely took up the ‘Movember’ challenge to raise awareness within the school of cancer and mental health amongst men.

Each teacher/6th former started the month clean shaven (some undertaking the ultimate ‘sacrifice’ of shaving off well matured beards and/or moustaches) and set about promoting the cause amongst Southborough students across all year groups.

Almost 50,000 men in the UK are being diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, accounting for 26% of all new cancer cases in males in the UK. 1 in 215 UK males will be diagnosed with testicular cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 3 people are likely to suffer from some form of mental health issue in their lifetime. Cancer and mental health issues can strike people of all ages, backgrounds and race. No one is immune. And being a predominantly all boys school (we have girls, too, in Sixth Form), the charity couldn’t be more relevant.

Assemblies and tutorials were conducted around the school and students had the opportunity to learn more about both cancer and mental health in men. They were able to ask lots of questions and become more knowledgeable, understanding and sympathetic towards about such sensitive –and often not talked about -  topics. Knowledge is, indeed, power.

The team set up a fund-raising page and staff and parents/carers were able to donate directly through this – or via Parent Pay. A sweepstake was run which raised even more money.(won by Pastoral Officer Mrs Karen Clements) Two of our superstar Southborough Charity Ambassadors – namely Year 9 students Daniel C and Thomas B – were happy to promote such a worthy cause by posing with their own moustaches, albeit the ‘stick on’ varieties! Both Thomas and Daniel were chosen to be our Charity Ambassadors because of the amazing work they did last year, raising a huge amount of money via sponsored activities for our annual RAG CHARITY 2020 event.

The way that students, parents/carers and staff ALL got behind this worthwhile ‘Movember’ initiative was truly AMAZING!!!! Times are particularly difficult for many families in the wider community, with uncertainty about the future, possible or actual redundancies and more. Despite this, our wonderful school community really pulled together and opened both their hearts and wallets. So much so, we are absolutely delighted to announce that an incredible £2000 plus was raised!!!

On behalf of the Movember Team – ably organised and run by ‘P.E. Teacher, Master of Rugby & Basketball and Duke of Edinburgh Co-Ordinator’ Mr Jordan – we’d like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who supported this worthwhile cause.

Mr Smith commented
"I was so proud of Southborough’s Open Evening, which took place on Wednesday 30th Septemeber. We worked hard as a community to show the wider community all that we have to offer. The evening flew by, with scheduled guided tours and speeches."

Naturally, the event went ahead with Health and Safety measures in place and after specially requested guidance from the Department for Education.
