Aspiration, Commitment and Excellence

I love being the headteacher of this school. Not only does the progress we have made over recent years fill me with enormous pride, but I also know that this is a school where staff and students work exceptionally well together. We are a school that is going places!

Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge

MS Brayne Thursday 29 Mar 2012

On a balmy evening in late March, two brave year 10s joined the rest of the speaking elite in Kingston for the borough final of Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Having completed a one-day workshop in school (with the rest of their class) Sajeev Kangatharan 10JMO (right in picture) and Vinuzan Ratnasingam 10JMO (left) were selected as the Southborough High School winners and therefore went forward to the borough final.

Vinuzan was another cool customer. He took his two minutes of time to speak to his audience about the importance of having ambitions and goals in life; he spoke with a level of maturity beyond his years (and that of many of his fellow competitors).

Whilst sadly neither Sajeev or Vinuzan were placed in the top three, they can still hold their heads up high and say that they are amongst the top 15 speakers in Kingston, an achievement which is certainly worth celebrating. It was a privilege to watch these two boys take to the stage and perorm so well and inspired by this (and hopeful of their expert contributions next year) Southborough High School will be hosting the Kingston final of the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge next year.

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge is a fantastic opportinuty for students to learn about public speaking and develop their confidence in expressing their own views and opinions to others. To then do this in a competitive environment is a truly fantas-tic achievment. To find out more, go to: http://www.speakoutchallenge.com/pages/home
