We encourage all students to believe in attitude over aptitude.
At Southborough, pupils are partially setted from Year 7. The top two or three classes per year group are in sets and the rest of the year group is taught in mixed ability classes. This allows us to stretch our top end effectively whilst providing those students for whom maths is difficult with good role models and support in class. Opportunities arise regularly for students to change sets if they perform well or need to have more consolidation of work. Mathematics is important for students in many other areas of study, particularly Science and Design & Technology. It is also important in many forms of employment, and in public decision-making.
Students are expected to achieve their full potential by enabling them to become independent learners, to question their own knowledge and seek creative solutions and alternate methods for mathematical problems.
Our policy is to respond to each student’s readiness to succeed at GCSE or A level, by entering them at an earlier age than is the national norm where this is appropriate.
